Starting a Home Practice

"Yoga is a light, which once lit, will never dim. The better your practice, the brighter the flame." - BKS Iyengar

Patricia Walden on the Benefits of Establishing a Home Practice:

Following are a list of recommended resources for starting and supporting your home practice.

I have listed the main props to get your home practice started. Just in case you cannot obtain all props at one time, I have listed the props in priority order so you have an idea of which props to get first.

Sticky Mats :

Recommended Quantity: 1

Source: High quality brands in the market are Jade and Manduka but any plain yoga mat will do.  Avoid those with extra thickness.

Wooden Blocks:

Recommended Quantity: 2

Source: - (Located in Boca Raton, FL) - (Located in Tampa, FL but Shipping can be arranged with the person who makes them)

Note: If you search other sites on the internet and it says "wooden" block, please note that these blocks are normally hollow.  I would recommend the solid wooden blocks that Bay Iyengar Yoga and/or Pura Vida Yoga provides.  The type of wood is left up to you.

Recommended Quantity: 4

  1. (midweight)

Recommended Quantity: 1

(To turn this into a yoga chair, hammer the back rest of the chair out.  It will leave some tiny metal studs on the frame that will need to be covered with electrical tape.)

6 foot Straps:

Recommended Quantity: 2

Foam Blocks :

Recommended Quantity: 2

Note: If you already have the wooden blocks the foam blocks are optional.

Ropes :

Most Iyengar studio will come with Ropes installed into their walls.

Below I provide a simpler home version, that is inexpensive, simple to install and is portable for those who travel.
